The World Economic Forum held the first of three country hearings of the Global Redesign Initative. In partnership with the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in cooperation with The Graduate Institute the Swiss seminar organized at the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva, focused on ‘Global Institutions and Global Governance, Lessons Learned and Ways Ahead’. The 100 participants at the hearing discussed the future of the UN, the multi-stakeholder involvement in global governance and a possible third generation of global institutions.
In his opening remarks, Lord Malloch-Brown, Senior Adviser to the Forum’s Global Redesign Initiative and former UN Deputy Secretary-General, stressed that “We have shifted from a G8 world to a G20 world. There are now major stakeholders at the table. We will see an acceleration of G20 like governance reform, first the International Monetary Fund (IMF), then the World Bank and finally the United Nations. There is no doubt that the burning platform from last year has created a huge new interest on how countries and governments can better organize to solve problems they cannot solve in their own way”, he added.
The Forum’s Global Redesign Initiative is a multistakeholder dialogue addressing the challenges of the 21st century. The interdisciplinary and cross-civilizational dialogue aims to develop recommendations to support the adaption, evolution and improvement of the structures and systems of international cooperation. The initiative was launched by the World Economic Forum in early 2009 under the patronage of the governments of Qatar, Singapore and Switzerland.

The dialogue is inherently intercultural in nature as well. I recommend Wibbeke's book on Global Business Leadership and also the work undertaken by the Rose Leadership Institute in fully understanding how culture is affecting global decision-making in the 21st century.
